CBS released its Masters online usage data today. The link there is to the original press release, so you can see the overall idea, features and the company spin on the coverage. And here is the year-over-year numbers that I got from from the CBS PR People.

2010 traffic for Masters Live on CBSSports.com:

  • 1.3MM unique visitors (+103% vs. 2009)
  • 1.37MM streaming hours (+90% vs. 2009)
  • 20.6 minutes/stream (+45% vs. 2009)

The take away? For sure, golfers seemed to have figured out how this whacky web thang works. Usage was up quite a bit. But, if you look at the web coverage, how much of that was actually innovative from this year over last? Prolly not much. The big traffic boost here of course was “Featured Group” coverage, otherwise known as the Tiger Cam. Without the drama of the world’s most famous philanderer, would this have been that hot a feature?

How many people really want to watch Sergio Garcia and Nathan Green battle it out for 48th? Not many.
