P3240500Last week I had the privilege of heading over to Madison Sq. Garden for the first ever 3D sports broadcast in the US.  Sky Sports over in England did it first.  At first I was skeptical about how much of an improvement 3D would make in  a game between the Rangers and the craptastic Islanders but I was blown away.  I thought we would be shown the game on one of the new commercially available 3D televisions but the MSG folks switched it up on us and showed the game in the Theater at MSG “Avatar-style”.  The first thing you notice is that the camera angles are a lot lower on a 3D broadcast.  If they had left them up high you wouldn ‘t get much depth of feel with 3D.   By bringing the cameras down low it looks like you are watching the game through a window or watching a moving diorama.  It is not shocking like horror movie 3D and pucks are not flying at you, but there is a definite  feeling of space.  As the players move toward the camera it feels like they are actually coming at you and when one is slammed into the boards its visceral.   That being said every time the popcorn guy walks in front of the camera there is a giant head in your lap and that can be disturbing.  I’m totally on board with watching sports in 3D but I’m going to have to wait like I did with HDTV for the prices to come down and a universal glasses standard to be worked out before I get one.
