QBs To Get Plays Live On Their Wrist? Meet The Live Wrist Play Display

Wanna know what I think is the coolest thing about the iPad? I can run just about the wildest display technology posts, and nobody can say squat. And here is the grand daddy of em all: The Live Quaterback’s Play Display.

Know those play holder things that QB’s wear so they can remember all the nutty plays. Right? Well, Arizona State University is working on a flexible display that can fit roughly inside one of these suckers and bring a live, real time image to a QBs arm. That’s the image above. See the screen and the guts and the hand to give you a sense of the scale. And this ain’t no Discovery Channel Sci Fi thang. The technology works today in the labs. I have actually seen it. It’s not the iPad. The image is a single color and relatively low rez. But is is bright and clear enough to show a simple play. And there is no question that the coaches should be able to send a Slant 52 vs Power 87 into the huddle in real time.

Now what it will take to get the unit battle hardened enough to work in an actual game, and what the wireless, data and other issues involved in getting a system to function still need to be worked out. But as I keep talking about, the pace of development in next-gen displays will only quicken, and sports will be right in the middle of that mix.
