Tramps like us, baby we were born to … plug in?! The absolute pinnacle of fire breathing gas powered guts is about go electric. This summer the National Hot Rod Association is allowing a new generation of electric dragsters to participate in some classes.

And the expectation among drag geeks we talked to, is they will flat out crush their gas powered cousins in some classes.

Electric dragsters are not hipsters looking to rock the boat. They are a competitive class of racing geeks looking to go really fast. And electric powered cars are the best way.  Electric engines pumped up with giant battery packs and powerful coils offer unparceled speed, 120 MPH plus, instantaneous torque at something nutty like 800 foot pounds. And something close to 1,000 horsepower in short bursts.

Don’t believe us? Check out the National Electric Drag Racing Association for photos and race details. What is not to love about a Pinto that can do the quarter mile in 7.1 and with absolutely no noise except tire squeal. And the NHRA has done the right thing by inviting their electrified cousins to come race to see who the quarter mile man is.

The larger speculation among racing nerds is that it is only a matter of time before larger racing associations allow in electric racers. Just think about it. Say, Danica Patrick in a Roush Electric Racing number 13 General Electric car?! Hello. That is going to be an event.
