Well, the sports anywhere age is upon us. After about three years in the making, Comcast announced today that it will start webcasting 27 channels. Users of the service will be able to watch content on any Web enabled device. The announcement was made earlier today at a press conference and then reported via the Wall Street Journal’s All Things D site, where it was picked up by Mashable. And then everyone else. But many questions remain. First of all, as far as we can tell sports content is way limited. Only NCAA VOD and the Golf Channel are available to our eye. And then there is the cost. Our take is, there will be roughly a $5 per month upcharge for some sort of sports tier. Now whether that is felt by the Web subscriber directly, or baked into the basic package, similar to how Cablevision handles its HD product, has yet to be worked out. And then there is the 800 pound gorilla here: ESPN. Considering its online ambitions, it will be interesting to see how the sports leader finesses its Web content net of the service. Either way, expect sports to be a lot more available online in 2010.
