NASCAR Going Green?

nascar-logo-scsIn an event that was about as shocking as the surprise ending in Titanic, Jimmie Johnson won his fourth strait championship this past weekend taking the Sprint Cup.  What you might not know is that NASCAR has been trying to get “Greener” this year.  Last year the hired Mike Lynch as their first director of green innovation and he has begun to change the culture of NASCAR. Well everything but the cars, some cars are getting a awesome 5 MPH and the overall carbon footprint of last year’s Daytona 500 was 14, 163 tons. Lynch has made some inroads teams are starting to build their shops to stringent LEED specifications (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and NASCAR is exploring the replacement of its carburetors with more efficient fuel injection (perhaps as early as 2011) and the use of alternative fuels in at least one of its national series.
